↖ Baseline
To start off, we will look at a table that shows how much damage you can expect to take in different armor weights and against different types of damage. The table was created by XR and Jessica Pates and modified by others, and it takes into account a +30 base damage modifier.
The numbers in the table show your effective health against different types of damage. For example, if you are in light armor and getting hit by someone in light armor with elemental damage, your effective health would be 4,762. The table also shows how much effective health you have against physical damage and against different armor weights.
↖ Vs. Fire Absorption Potion
The most commonly used Consumable is the Infused Fire Absorption Potion, which provides 15 absorptions against fire damage. This means you take less damage from fire attacks but not from other types of damage. When we compare the table with and without the fire absorption potion, we can see a significant increase in effective health against fire attacks.
For example, in heavy armor against a light attacker with fire damage, your effective health goes up from 17,000 to 20,000 with the fire absorption potion.
↖ Vs. Gemstone Dust/Oakflesh Balm
Another commonly used consumable is Powerful Gemstone Dust or Powerful Oakflesh Balm, which provide 35% fortification against elemental or physical damage, respectively. When we compare the table with and without these consumables, we can see that they provide a significant increase in effective health against their respective types of damage.
For example, in heavy armor against a light attacker with elemental damage, your effective health goes up from 11,429 to 15,385 with Powerful Gemstone Dust.
↖ Understanding the Fortify Changes
With the Forge Patch, the meta for consumables in wars, outpost rush, and arenas have changed. Previously, the most commonly used consumables were the Infused Fire Absorption Potions and Powerful Gemstone Dust, which provide fortify for physical or elemental damage. However, with the Fortify changes, these consumables lost some of their value.
While the Infused Fire Absorption Potion is labelled as absorption in its description, it is actually classified as a fortify that scales off armor. On the other hand, Elemental Absorption Potions still provide absorption and are not affected by the changes. As a result, many players have shifted towards using Fire Absorption Potions, especially since fire is a prevalent element in the game. Some players are now also considering using Arcane Absorption Potions due to the introduction of detonate.
↖ Understanding Armor Weight
Before we delve into the different New World consumables, let's understand armor weight. New World features three types of armor weight: light, medium, and heavy. Light armor provides the least amount of defense but offers high mobility and is suitable for ranged players. Medium armor offers moderate defense and is suitable for players who prefer a balanced playstyle. Heavy armor provides the most defense but lowers mobility and is suitable for players who want to tank.
↖ Choosing the Right Consumable
Now, let's look at the different consumables and their effectiveness based on armor weight.
- Infused Fire Absorption Potions: These potions provide fortification against fire damage and scale-off armor. They are most effective for players in heavy armor as they offer the most defense against fire damage. However, they lose their value against physical damage. If you are a heavy armor player who faces fire damage frequently, these potions are the right choice for you.
- Elemental Absorption Potions: These potions provide absorption against elemental damage and are most effective for players in light armor. They are also useful for medium armor players who face a lot of elemental damage. If you are a light armor player who faces elemental damage frequently, these potions are the right choice for you.
- Powerful Oakflesh Balm: This balm provides a fortify against physical damage and is most effective for players in medium armor that are weighted towards physical damage. It is also useful for heavy armor players who want to increase their physical defense. If you are a medium armor player who faces physical damage frequently, this balm is the right choice for you.
- Powerful Gemstone Dust: This dust provides a fortify against elemental damage and is most effective for players in medium armor that are weighted towards elemental damage. It is also useful for heavy armor players who want to increase their elemental defense. If you are a medium armor player who faces elemental damage frequently, this dust is the right choice for you.
↖ Absorption Potions vs. Oakflesh Balm
Infused Fire Absorption Potions have been a favourite among many players in New World because they reduce fire damage. However, since the fortified changes, they have lost some value. Even though they are labelled as absorption, they are classified as fortify, which means they scale off your armor. Elemental absorption potions, on the other hand, still have absorption, which is the same effect as gems. This makes them more direct and generally reduces the damage a little bit more.
Powerful Oakflesh Balm is a great alternative to Infused Fire Absorption Potions. It counters physical damage and still has a purpose beyond heavy armor. It may not be as effective as absorption potions, but it still has value. If you're running light armor, absorption potions can be more effective in some situations but don't undervalue oak flesh balm completely. It is still worth having multiple types of damage reduction for multiple different incoming attacks, especially in the arena where you may get hit by multiple players at once with different sources of damage.
↖ Recommendations
So which Consumable should you use? It depends on the situation. If you are fighting against a lot of fire damage, the Infused Fire Absorption Potion is a good choice. If you are fighting against a lot of elemental damage, Powerful Gemstone Dust is a good choice. If you are fighting against a lot of physical damage, Powerful Oakflesh Balm is a good choice. Keep in mind that the consumables only provide protection against their respective types of damage, so you may need to switch between them depending on the situation.
Conclusion:
Choosing the right Consumable can make a big difference in your survivability and effectiveness in combat. Infused Fire Absorption Potions are good against fire damage, Powerful Gemstone Dust is good against elemental damage, and Powerful Oakflesh Balm is good against physical damage. Make sure to switch between them depending on the situation to maximize your effectiveness.
