SCORN, puzzles and nightmare design analysis
The moment has arrived. We finally have the analysis of Scorn , one of those expected for the final stretch of this year. Developed by the Serbian study, EBB Software , take as a source of inspiration the works of h. R. Tiger and Zdzisław Helsinki. In fact, the similarities with Alien, by Ridley Scott, are sometimes evident.
The argument takes place in an unknown, gloomy universe, of strange and twisted forms. The player awakens in an environment full of biomechanical elements in what seems like a civilization mired in desolation. A disturbing fauna sleeps in the bowels of this dream world and does not want to be disturbed. The whole story occurs in the game itself, without scenes that serve to distract the player from reality that offers a scenario that seems to be alive. The overwhelming atmosphere that shows is a protagonist in itself. Everything is designed to generate a disturbing atmosphere, from the original organic ecosystem to the sound section created by Anthem & Mustard.

The narrative can be diverse and video games make use of this variety. In this case, visceral, spooky and at the same time Bella is also manifested. Scorn does not have dialogues, most of the narrative comes from the environment. Discover symbiotic relationships and how everything is connected is the main mechanics to move forward. Although in the game there are shots, Scorn is not a shorter. Through puzzles and some miniguegos we must advance through several rooms and roads with labyrinth structure. However, once the puzzle is resolved, we discover that there is only a possible path.
Likewise, at some moments a certain brushstroke of walking simulator comes out. Scorn has a powerful atmosphere and highlights its technical section. The design of organic scenarios and the architecture of the levels is remarkable. As a consequence we find many moments in which we move slowly, observing the environment to understand it and at the same time enjoy it. Scorn is designed to play carefully.
Then, to interact in this mysterious world, the protagonist has a strange gadget that acts as a key and weapon. This curious tool, also of organic appearance, serves to operate switches and select four of the different weapons that we can hold. Therefore, during the adventure we will improve our Sahara with different additions that will allow us to alternate different types of shot.

For this reason, another of the outstanding elements is the interaction on the stage and with our tool. Consequently, to alternate the different types of shooting, the player must change one piece for another removing and placing bone aspect elements. Similarly, the design of the inventory, simple but original. On the other hand, it highlights the way of healing from that inventory that seems to be alive and the recharges of the different types of ammunition. Certainly, this is one of the aspects that I liked most about the game.
Scorn It can be somewhat raw at the beginning, not only because of the hardness of some images. As soon as he guides the player, he does not offer any explanation to survive in his nightmare environment. Here also lies part of its charm. The combat system is a bit clumsy, but it is true that clashes are scarce and most of the time it is better to avoid them. There is also a wide variety of enemies. After its careful setting the strong point is the design of the puzzles. From half of the adventure the game takes a little more rhythm, the scenarios open and this is appreciated.
A nightmare that you will not forget
As a result, it may not be a recommended experience for the commercial public and that I liked. The setting and design of levels are the most notable points. Scorn It lasts just 6 hours and this is not necessarily a negative point. The game offers precisely what promised without further pretensions: an adventure of horror and puzzles with a good level design created by a small study. Once finished, it is true that it does not offer excuses for a second round, beyond enjoying its atmosphere and reinterpreting the story with its outcome. If you are looking to play something different and attract the positive aspects mentioned above Scorn is an ideal candidate.
Certainly, on a personal level, it has left me a bittersweet feeling. Not so much because of the shortcomings of your combat system or the scarce duration, rather because of the desire with which you stop enjoying your personality and virtues.
The last confrontation, with a kind of boss, is a pleasant and unexpected surprise and managed to remind me fleetingly to Bios hock . Perhaps these moments and their best stings should have been exploited. Finally, Scorn is one of those video games difficult to forget, for one reason or another.
