The best Couch Co-op games will always be the ones you can play with your friends, whether they are in your living room or on the other side of the world. So which games should you be playing in 2022? This article will explore some of the most excellent co-op games coming out over the next few years and go into some of the most important things you need to know about them.
Some popular couch co-op games include Rayman Legends, and Towerfall Ascension, Unravel 2. These games are all excellent choices for parties or other social gatherings. They are also perfect for couples or friends who want to play video games together.
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
Everything you read in the Borderlands 3 post just now applies because this game is Borderlands in Wonderland.
Here you will find everything that makes up a decent fantasy world. From goblins to magicians to a unicorn queen, everything is there. Instead of psychos, you will encounter magic mushrooms, skeletons, pirates, or skeleton pirates.
You are not in the everyday Borderlands world but a tabletop RPG devised by Tiny Tina. This also adds some special features that are not known from Borderlands.
This includes:
A board game-like overworld to connect the individual areas
Magic instead of grenades
A complete, totally free character editor
The multiclass system allows you to connect two skill trees of different classes
Also on board is a good portion of humor, with numerous allusions to fantasy clichés and funny situations.
This is how you can play together:
It's the same as with Borderlands 3: you can play with two people on split-screen on the old consoles. On the new consoles, there are up to four players. There is no split-screen mode on PC this time either – you have to use the online method here.
As usual, there are also options here
to play in co-op, to let opponents scale to the respective level, and to get your loot
or adapt the opponents to the group leader and fight for loot.
Who is this for?
If you like Borderlands gameplay, you will like Wonderlands gameplay. There are only a few differences here, apart from the magic influence and the improved melee combat.
However, Wonderlands brings a lot of fresh wind into the somewhat dusty formula with its fantasy element and can surprise you with creative ideas. And if you generally like little crazy games, you've come to the right place here anyway.
Overcooked! All You Can Eat
In this collection, players will find remastered versions of the first and second parts of Overcooked and all additional content that both games have received in recent years. All You Can Eat offers over 200 different levels where you have to fight your way through the kitchen chaos together.
Here's how you can play together: In Overcooked, you and up to four players have to ensure that food ends up on the plate and is served. However, you first have to grab the right ingredients, chop them up, put them in the pot, pan, or oven and then help them in the correct combination.
The scary thing:
There is a mercilessly decreasing time limit per order on the one hand. On the other hand, the levels are constantly in motion. So you can get obstacles in your way, little animals pug your ingredients, or the ground shifts. The further you progress, the more insane the level design gets.
With all this chaos, it's damn difficult to keep a cool head and divide up the tasks sensibly. But that's precisely the fun of the game. However, you have to admit that the frustration factor can quickly increase if things don't go well.
Who is this for?
If you pop Overcooked, be prepared for a lot of stress. Excellent teamwork and quick coordination of processes are required - otherwise, failure is inevitable.
But the whole thing is a lot of fun once the processes are in place. The cute look of the game and the entertaining music ensure that the whole thing always has a social background.
Overcooked is perfect for a fun evening of co-op with friends or family. A plus point is the straightforward controls. So you can play the game well with people who otherwise have little access to games.
Diablo 3
After the game initially appeared in May 2012, and even the later versions, Ultimate Evil Edition or Eternal Collection with additional content, are already a few years old, one has to say: Diablo 3 is now an old game. No wonder many fans are now eagerly awaiting Diablo IV.
But even today, the action RPG classic is worth a few rounds of co-op gameplay. You collect better and better equipment and improve your skills. In terms of content, the game ties in with the dark Diablo predecessors: you have to choose from one of 7 different classes and face the henchmen of the prince of hell, Diablo.
You observe the whole thing from the iso perspective, i.e., diagonally from above. On the consoles, the control designed for the mouse and keyboard was converted well to the controller so that you can easily slice your way through hell. And that too together.
How you can play together:
The PC version only offers online co-op, but you can play the campaign together with up to four players right from the couch on one screen on the consoles. The screen is not shared. You all always move together on the same map section. If you run too far away from the group, you will be teleported to the others.
By the way, you don't have to worry if you're not all on the same page: it's more fun if you know the story of Diablo and have gotten your way into the account. But overall, the monster shredding works without too much prior knowledge.
Who is this for?
You should generally have a heart for hack & slays and loot collecting - otherwise, and Diablo 3 is not necessarily your game. But if you can get excited about it, the game can also score points with action-packed gameplay. The game's look has also held up quite well to this day, years after its release. Diablo 3 is still worth it in 2022.
Another plus point is the constantly changing seasons, which continuously provide the game with new challenges and content. While these are no longer huge updates, they still ensure long-term gaming fun.
FIFA 22
The annual offshoot of the sports series focuses on concentrated football action. You can prove your soccer skills on the virtual pitch in different modes. You can hunt for the perfect team in Ultimate Team, build your favorite club into a top team in career mode, or play street soccer in Volta.
This is how you can play together:
The classic FIFA night consists of pushing goals into each other without end. But if you prefer to approach things in a more friendly way, you have a few options.
For example, you can play Ultimate Team together in couch co-op mode and challenge online opponents from all over the world. Both the friendly games and modes such as draft or division rivals can be played cooperatively.
An excellent alternative is playing career mode together on the couch. Here you can make transfer decisions together, set up your team, and manage your club (but only with one controller). But you can play the matches together.
Who is this for?
Of course, if you don't know anything about football, you should keep your hands off FIFA. But if you fancy an entertaining football evening without going out to the soccer field, you can throw in the game without hesitation. If you play cooperatively, there are not as many points of contention as in a duel against each other.
Magicka 2
In Magicka 2, you take on budding magicians who set out to save a colorful fantasy world. Whether that's excellent news for this world is debatable. Because while you undoubtedly ensure that evil enemies are sent to the afterlife with your magic spells, you will also accidentally reduce one or the other village to rubble.
The game is based on a total of elemental spells that you can cast either in a ray, on yourself, or in a circle around you. The highlight is that you can mix these spells like crazy and trigger crazy attacks. This is how burning boulders or electrically charged water streams come about very quickly.
The typical fantasy setting is garnished with funny allusions and entertaining sayings, so it doesn't take too seriously.
Here's how you can play together:
While Magicka 2 is a solo title you can safely put aside, it's glorious chaos that makes for lots of laughs in co-op. You can fight your way through the fantasy world with three players.
The Fiese:
Friendly Fire is always switched on. With the wild attacks that you Fire, you will attack evil goblins and innocent villagers, and your fellow players from time to time. An apologetic Oops will come from your lips more often - before chasing the next fire-electric beam across the screen and wreaking havoc.
But you can also combine your spells. Why don't you try directing a jet of lightning and a jet of water at an opponent simultaneously and see what happens?
Who is this for?
Do you like fantasy, humor, and co-op action? Then you are in the right place. Yes, Magicka 2 is already a few years old, and graphically it is not a flagship title. However, the gameplay has held up wonderfully and is fun with its entertaining fights.
However, the game only shines when you play together. So if you're looking for a game that you can play alone, you might want to look elsewhere.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
The third part of the series continues the Ultimate Alliance games in the usual style - unusually but exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. The game is an action RPG in which you take on the heroes from the Marvel comics to face Thanos and his Black Order.
And the field of heroes is awe-inspiring:
Over 30 characters can be played: From Spider-Man to the X-Men and the Avengers to Deadpool or Captain Marvel. Pretty much everything is included. There are also a variety of enemies that you have to defeat.
How to play together: You can play with up to four players and access a large part of the playable heroes quickly after the intro sequence with the Guardians of the Galaxy. You can unlock the other characters as the story progresses.
You can play the entire story together. All characters have their skills and attacks that you can level up and improve. There are also super attacks that you can activate in a team - here, and it is essential to coordinate.
Who is this for?
Ultimate Alliance 3 is the perfect game to beat your way through the Marvel world together. It is among the best co-op games on the Nintendo Switch. If you have a heart for superheroes, you will have fun here because few games offer such a wide range of heroes.
Technically, there are a few stutters, but they don't spoil the gaming experience too much. For some fun hero smashing, you can throw in Ultimate Alliance 3 - unless you don't have a Nintendo Switch. Then it becomes problematic.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Mario needs no introduction. The new version of Super Mario 3D World is also primarily about hopping, collecting upgrades, and jumping on enemies heads.
In the Switch version, you can do this with four players who split up Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad among themselves. There is also an extraordinary adventure that revolves around a Godzilla-esque giant variant of Bowser.
How to play together:
Four of you can travel the Super Mario 3D World world and play all the levels together. Upgrades, climbing, jumping through tubes - you do everything together.
The controls are easy to learn, and the usual Mario look is, of course, child-friendly. So you can easily play a few co-op rounds with family, friends, or whoever - even if you don't have much video game experience.
Thanks to the switch, the whole thing can also be done on the go, but the co-op mode is more suitable on the big screen of your television. The whole thing quickly becomes confusing in handheld mode, and you are desperately looking for your character.
Alternatively, you can even play the game in an online co-op.
Who is this for?
You won't go wrong with Super Mario 3D World if you like the typical Mario fare. The cheerful mood of the game makes for fun, and the level of difficulty is also suitable for gaming beginners.
If you don't like colorful, friendly Games, but need something more serious, you've come to the wrong place.
The Lego Games
This entry represents a whole range of games that have created their niche: The Lego games, in which famous film series or other franchises are implemented as adventures.
The games are simple, with easy puzzles and combat and the opportunity to tinker with Lego. The game principle is similar: you primarily run through film plots or specially created stories with Lego versions of the associated characters. You can usually choose from a massive field of characters and unlock more and more as the game progresses.
Some examples are:
Lego Star Wars
Lego Harry Potter
Lego DC Super-Villains
Lego Marvel Super Heroes
Lego Jurassic World
lego batman
This is how you can play together:
The games can all be played in couch co-op. You can then grab a character of your choice and play through the story with her. As the game progresses, you get more and more characters with different abilities, which you then use to solve puzzles within the level.
In addition to just running through, there are always stones to collect and bonuses to activate, which gives the levels a high replay value.
Who is this for?
The same applies here: These are beautiful games, especially for children and beginners. But adults can also get a laugh out of the unique humor of the Lego games and the numerous references to the respective franchises. By the way, there are even more alternative games for children here.
On the other hand, it is also evident here: If you are more interested in serious, adult games, you do not need to start a Lego game.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a building game, but it also has RPG elements. You have inherited your grandfather's farm, and you are starting to build up this farm.
In the pixel look, you now create fields, go fishing or raise animals. At the same time, you have the opportunity to make friends and even form relationships with the residents of the local village.
There is also the opportunity to go on a journey of discovery. Dangerous caves in the area want to be explored.

Rayman Legends
Ubisoft's Rayman series is also a few years old, but Rayman Legends is still a real co-op gem. In the 2D comic look, you jump, box, and run your way through colorful levels that score points with their chic design and varied challenges.
It is a typical, albeit particularly chic, sidescroller. So you move from left to right and have to face increasingly complex obstacles and ultimately some boss fights.
This is how you can play together: Up to four players can beat their way through the levels together. Not necessarily helpful, but funny! This is actually to be understood literally since you can box each other if necessary.
The difficulty level is quite suitable for children, and the controls are easy to learn. However, Rayman Legends also has its challenging parts, and you don't flutter through the game by yourself.
Who is this for?
It's similar to Mario: The game is colorful, has a friendly look, and offers a challenge that you can crack even with little expertise. So if you are looking for a friendly game that you can play with everyone, this is the place for you.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a game with a charm all of its own. This applies to both the optics and the gameplay.
You fly through space together in a large ball and have to prove your skills. With the LOVERS - League of Very Empathetic Rescue Spacenauts - you are on your way to defeat anti-love. That's the premise.
How to play together: Up to four players can take control of the spaceship. Your task is to react quickly to situations and operate various devices in the spacecraft. It's all about speed here.
So that you don't stand on each other's space shoes, you should coordinate well. After all, it is often necessary to make quick decisions and keep an eye on several processes simultaneously. You shouldn't be fooled by the cute design: the whole thing is quite challenging.
Who is this for?
The same applies here: you have to have a heart for colorful, cute game designs. If you prefer shooting your way through war-torn shooters, this isn't exactly the place for you.
Towerfall Ascension
In Towerfall Ascension, you will find pixelated maps that consist of platforms similar to Smash Bros. But here, you don't hit each other, and you have to shoot each other with arrows.
The game is easy to learn but can quickly become a bow and arrow master class in duels. Because: The arrows are not infinite but must be collected again.
In addition to the simple arrows, there are boxes from which you can secure power-ups. They make your projectiles even more dangerous by equipping your hands with explosive power. In addition, the game features defensive protection items and traps. The full results in a wild mixture that ends in entertaining fights.
How to play together:
You can fight each other with up to three players. It's a lot of fun, but since this is a co-op list, it's also worth mentioning the co-op mode. There you can take on the AI in pairs.
Who is this for?
You can play Towerfall Ascension without much prior knowledge, and it is primarily about exact matches. Still, it's an attractive choice for some head-to-head duels. However, anyone who has already gained experience in the game should quickly put friends in their place.
If you prefer to be friendly, you can quickly start the co-op mode. You should only have something left for pixel optics.
Unravel 2
In the second part of the Unravel series, you take on the role of two yarn characters made of good feelings. Together you search for the so-called spark - and solve a whole series of puzzles on the journey.
This is matched by the beautiful look of the game and the pleasant music that accompanies you on your journey. You can also see how the Yarnis interact with each other and, for example, are happy when they have once again overcome an abyss. That makes you happy right away.
How you can play together:
The gameplay is designed for co-op. The physics-based puzzles often require two pairs of helping hands and teamwork to solve.
Whether you're swinging over a chasm or saving each other from falling, you need to be able to rely on each other and work together at all times. You can do this with an AI comrade, but it's friendlier with two.
Who is this for? Unravel 2 is a heartfelt game that also requires brainpower. Feelings, riddles, and hopping passages in the mix - you should look for another round if you don't like that.
Borderlands 3
The Borderlands series is pretty dorky, and Borderlands 3 is no exception. The comic-style shooter offers a vast chunk of different weapons and lots of humor.
In terms of play, you take control of one of the four exterminators: Moze, FL4K, Amara, and Zane are available, each with their unique skills. It is now a matter of steadily increasing the level, crafting good builds, and collecting the perfect weapons with them.
The plot presents you with the Calypso twins as opponents. Not only do Troy and Tyreen aim for galaxy-wide domination, but they also act as the blueprint of annoying influencers. You can read more about the story of Borderlands 3 here.
Here's how you can play together:
Borderlands 3 can be played on vertical or horizontal split-screen. You can start with up to two players on PS4 and Xbox One. Thanks to the extensive NextGen upgrade, split-screen for three or four players is even possible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. On the PC, however, split-screen is not on board.
You can complete the entire campaign and all side and endgame activities together. You can decide whether you want to play cooperation or co-op competition.
Cooperation provides unique loot for all players. There is also level sync with each other and level-adapted opponents.
On the other hand, Co-op competition makes the same loot available to everyone. In addition, there is no level sync, and enemy levels are based on the group leader. First come, first serve!
The whole thing is also possible in online mode – if you need more players for your session.
Who is this for?
If you want to play Borderlands 3, you should be into fast-paced shooter gameplay in which there are constant flashes, flashes, and bangs. Explosions and wild battles are the order of the day. The whole thing is paired with a good pinch of madness in terms of story and weapons.
For example, some grenades rain on enemies like flopping, exploding fish. If you like it solemn, you should instead insert another game.
Cuphead
Don't let the cute cartoon look and happy music fool you because this game is the goddamn devil. And that fits because you take over the two mug people, Cuphead and Mugman, who have bet their souls to those same devils.
Luckily, the devil agrees to a deal that requires Cuphead and Mugman to collect the souls of other debtors. And so the two (at least in co-op, in single-player, you can choose one of the two cups) set off to complete this task. And this is where you come in.
This is how you can play together:
The principle of the game is straightforward. You move from left to right through the levels, which consist of either direct boss fights or platforming levels. You can fire shots from your fingers and the ability to jump, and various upgrades for your attacks.
The whole thing takes place in a lovingly designed world based on nostalgic cartoons.
However, this friendly design contrasts with the relentless level of difficulty. Be prepared for many, many, many deaths in Cuphead, and they can all be sudden. It's never really unfair, and you usually know why you just died. Still, it can be frustrating.
The positive thing about it is: Nothing is as liberating as completing one of the damn challenging levels after what feels like a thousand deaths.
Who is this for?
The visuals alone make the game worth checking out, as it does feel like classic Walt Disney cartoons come to life on screen. Conversely, you've gone wrong if you don't like these cartoons.
In addition, you should have a lot of patience because the level of difficulty is highly challenging. But it can be a lot of fun, especially for two, to face this challenge.
Rocket league
Do you like soccer, but also flying rocket cars? Completely normal combination. Developer Psyonix probably thought when Rocket League was spread out on the identical. Rightly so, although it's now a good six years old, Rocket League still has a very passionate fan base.
The principle is quickly explained: you have to get a ball into the goal like in soccer. Just not with footballers, but with turbocharged cars that can also fly.
What sounds like a silly game is quite skill-loaded. Hitting the ball isn't all that easy initially, and the feats you see in esports matches are probably the result of some crazy science.
But once you have the controls in place, fast-paced matches are the order of the day. Everything is included from 1 vs 1 to 4 vs 4. Everything is included, including fun modes such as basketball or hockey variants.
This is how you can play together:
The principle of the game remains the same. In addition to an online mode, Rocket League also supports couch co-op on split-screen. Here you can form a team together and challenge opponents worldwide.
The split-screen mode works very well, but you have to deal with a somewhat limited view. This is sometimes a hindrance in the sometimes quite confusing matches. Nevertheless: a round of Rocket League for two on the couch is perfect if you are looking for an entertaining game in between.
Who is this for?
There is no story or anything like that here. There is only progress in terms of ranks or cosmetics that you unlock. So Rocket League is primarily a game for pure competition. If you don't like it, you should choose another game.
On the other hand, it's the perfect game if you're looking for a bit of a challenge and a pinch of madness at the same time. Then Rocket League is an excellent choice. A passion for soccer might help, but overall, Rocket League has so little to do with soccer that you can do without it. Anyway, we had a lot of fun with the Rocket League.
